Herd on a Blue Plain

More than a dozen humped cattle are scattered across a vast, featureless blue-grey field, each rendered in crisp photorealist detail yet stranded in space. Some graze at nothing, some lie folded on the ground, others turn their rumps to us or wander off the lower edge; a couple of dark-spotted cattle break the pale herd.

There is no grass, no horizon, no shade, only the even blue that isolates every animal in its own pocket of emptiness. The tenderness of the individual studies collides with the desolation of the whole, a herd marooned as the green they need is quietly erased.
