Woman in a Ghoonghat

An older woman looks out from beneath a veil, a bindi at her brow and long beaded ornaments falling from her ears. The drawing is caught mid-process: the face is worked up to a full tonal likeness, the planes of the cheeks and the set of the mouth firmly modelled.

Around that resolved head the ghoonghat, the choker and the striped bodice stay as bare contour, unshaded. The contrast is instructive, showing how the artist wins the likeness first and leaves the surrounding cloth as scaffolding.
